The castle first mentioned in 1260 was besieged and burnt to the ground. It was rebuilt and besieged a second time. Over the years it was continually enlarged reaching its present size by 1637. The castle suffered heavily in 1944 as a result of German destructiveness and allied shelling during WW11. A lengthy restoration began that lasted until 1983. It is now maintained by "Friends of the Castle of Gelderland"
